Kobe Steel Group Companies have announced that their ITmk3 plant can produce high-grade iron with lower-cost iron ore in 10 min which emits 20% less CO2 emission. If this is true, then this technology is really useful for human beings.
World's first commercial ITmk3 plant successfully begins production - Next-generation ironmaking process produces high-purity iron nuggets (January 14, 2010)
TOKYO, January 14, 2010 - Kobe Steel, Ltd. announces that the world's first commercial plant using the ITmk3® Process successfully began production of iron nuggets in the United States on January 12 at 6:00 pm CST. The next-generation ITmk3 Process was developed by Kobe Steel.
1. High-grade iron nuggets can be produced in an extremely short time of about 10 minutes.
2. The ITmk3 Process can use lower-cost iron ore fines and steaming coal, which are difficult to use in blast furnace ironmaking.
3. In comparison to pig iron produced in a blast furnace, the production of iron nuggets using the ITmk3 Process emits about 20% less carbon dioxide due to its good energy efficiency.

Memorize Dr. David Landsborough IV
Only people who can love will be loved forever. Here is the life story about Dr. David Landsborough IV (Dec. 14, 1914 - March 2, 2010) and his father Dr. David Landsborough III who contributed their whole life as a doctor to save Taiwanese.
Dr David Landsborough IV
"Of the thousands of foreign Christian missionaries who have served in Taiwan since World War II, few can have been better prepared for the island's society, language and environment than Dr David Landsborough IV."
Skin Graft with Love
Some 250 years ago, the name was McClamroch. Then it was changed to McLandsborough; and then to Landsborough. If the reason was to make the name shorter, then Taiwan was the right place to be. Both Dr. Landsborough III and IV were simply called Dr. Lan (Lân I-Seng; 蘭醫生.) The Landsborough III was Dr. Lan, and Landsborough IV was young Dr. Lan.

Formosa Betrayed
I want to see this movie, Formosa Betrayed. Information in imdb. It is inspired by actual events, a brutal political murder of a Taiwanese-American professor (Dr. Chen, Wen-Chen) in Taiwan. The movie moved the murder scene to US soil, but it still shows the situation in 1980s Taiwan when the FBI agent did his investigation in Taiwan.
Movie Review: Formosa Betrayed: When the Language of Diplomacy Includes 'Kapow!' (By STEPHEN HOLDEN, NY Times, February 26, 2010)

Dam Level in Brisbane
After raining so many for a long time recently, there are several flood news everyday. I would like to put up this information in here as a note and show people how the dam level change in this couple years.
Seqwater dam level update – 5PM Thursday 4 March 2010
Wivenhoe, Somerset & North Pine dams (Greater Brisbane)
Combined dam levels are currently 85.2%, up from 74.1% last Friday.
Wivenhoe Dam has increased to 77.8% (up from 61.5% since Friday, with an average of 4mm of rainfall across the catchment to 9AM this morning and 109mm in the last seven days.) Wivenhoe's level has also been boosted by releases from Somerset Dam.
Somerset Dam was at 97.8% on Friday and is now at 100%. The Somerset catchment has received 13mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 9AM this morning and 195mm in the last seven days.
North Pine Dam is at 99.3% with 11mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 9AM this morning and 197mm in the last seven days. The floodgates have now been closed.
The Spit at Somerset Dam has been reopened for recreational purposes following closure for safety reasons earlier in the week.
Hinze Dam (Gold Coast)
Hinze Dam has been overflowing for over two weeks. The catchment for Hinze Dam and Little Nerang Dam has averaged 19mm in the 24 hours to 9AM this morning and 127mm of rainfall in the last seven days.
Lake Baroon Pocket (Sunshine Coast)
Lake Baroon’s level has increased from 96.3% on Friday 26 February and is currently overflowing, with 25mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 9AM this morning and 328mm in the last seven days.
Baroon Pocket Dam has been closed for all recreational purposes, including boating, for safety reasons as a result of heavy rainfall from Monday 1 March. Borumba Dam is currently inaccessible due to flooding on Yabba Creek Road.
Irrigator Dams
As reported this morning, many of Seqwater’s other dams are getting good boosts from the rainfall:
- Maroon Dam near Boonah is at 87.7% capacity, the highest level since November 1999
- Moogerah Dam near Aratula is at 59.8% capacity, the highest level since April 1997
- Atkinson Dam near Coominya is at 48.9% capacity, the highest level since September last year
- Bill Gunn Dam near Laidley is at 29.3% capacity, the highest level since June last year

Saving Taiwan Humpback Dolphin
The introduction in "Save the Taiwan Humpback Dolphin: The Taiwan Humpback Dolphins
Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis), locally known as “Matsu’s Fish” is grey when born, develops grey-blue freckles during its youth, and turns white or pink when fully mature, hence its other popular names in Mandarin Chinese meaning "white dolphin" or “pink dolphin”. Local people from fishing villages have named the animal after Matsu, the Sea Goddess, perhaps as result of seeing the humpback dolphins most often around Matsu's birthday in March/April when the seas return to a calmer state. Populations of this species can be found in the temperate and tropical waters off the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, and their preferred habitats are transition areas close to shore, particularly estuarine waters.
A small and highly dedicated research team called FormosaCetus Research & Conservation Group have found that the animals living along Taiwan's west coast are an isolated, resident population with distinct colour patterns from humpback dolphins elsewhere and are likely a distinct subspecies. They are already legally protected under Taiwan's Wildlife Conservation Act, but that hasn't prevented the ongoing destruction of their habitat, and just last year they were listed as "Critically Endangered" under the IUCN Red List. There are now estimated to be less than one hundred left in the population, and there is a high likelihood that Taiwan's entire population will become extinct if real efforts are not made to mitigate or reduce the threats to their survival.

Retrofit of the Empire State Building
I got an email from RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute) today about the success of the retrofit of the Empire State Building. In April of 2009, the Empire State Building Company announced a $550 million renovation which expected to save 38 percent of the building’s energy, and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 105,000 metric tons over fifteen years.
After 10 months, the project is finished and improvements are expected to decrease the building’s energy costs by $4.4 million annually, increase tenant occupancy rates and enhance work environments.
The beginning of the letter:
We are excited to announce that, along with project partners Jones Lang LaSalle, Clinton Climate Initiative and Johnson Controls, RMI has won the Sustainable Building Industry Council’s "Beyond Green High Performance Building Award" for the retrofit of the Empire State Building!
